The Healthy Habits I Swear by as a Research Nurse

Having worked in oncology as a research nurse, I’ve seen firsthand the impact of lifestyle choices on health. It’s made me deeply intentional about taking care of my body and prioritizing my wellness in every aspect of life. Some may call my habits extreme, but I believe it’s better to do too much and stay healthy than to do too little and risk preventable illnesses.

One of the most deliberate changes I’ve made is staying hydrated. I make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep my body functioning optimally.

Another non-negotiable for me is applying sunscreen before leaving the house, rain or shine. Protecting my skin from harmful UV rays is something I take seriously, knowing the long-term consequences of neglecting it.

Exercise plays a big role in my routine as well. I’ve fallen in love with walking and swimming, two low-impact exercises that help keep me fit and active. These activities don’t just benefit my body but also clear my mind, helping me manage stress.

Being mindful of my health also means being proactive about symptoms. I make it a point to report any unusual changes in my body to my GP, no matter how small they may seem. Early detection and prompt action can make all the difference.

In my day-to-day life, I’m careful to avoid passive smoke, as I understand the risks of second-hand smoke exposure. Another key habit is making sure I move my bowels daily—while it may seem trivial, digestive health is a huge indicator of overall well-being.

Some might think these habits are over the top, but my perspective has always been that health is priceless. I’d rather go the extra mile to stay healthy than do too little and regret it later.

How do you stay intentional about your health? I’d love to hear your wellness tips and routines in the comments below! Let’s share ideas on how we can all live healthier, happier lives.
