I am from the Yoruba tribe of Nigeria, a group that primarily resides in the southwestern region of the country. In Yoruba culture, names are rich in meaning and are given with a profound understanding of the child’s life, the family’s hopes, and the legacy they wish to carry forward.

Although I was given both English and Yoruba names, today, I want to share with you the story of my Yoruba name: Opeyemi. It means “I am worthy to give thanks.”

This name isn’t just a label; it encapsulates who I am and the essence of my life. Every time I hear my name, I am reminded of my purpose and the gratitude that flows through me. My name is the best way to summarize my life—a life that exudes praise and thanksgiving to God.

To me, Opeyemi is more than just an identification. It is a constant reminder to be thankful and to recognize the blessings in my life, no matter the circumstances. It’s about living with a spirit of gratitude, understanding that no matter what comes my way, I have a reason to give thanks.
