One item I never leave home without is my hand cream. As a nurse, my hands are constantly exposed to harsh soaps, hand sanitizers, and frequent washing throughout my shifts. While maintaining proper hygiene is critical in our profession, it often leads to dry, cracked skin that can be both uncomfortable and painful. That’s where my trusty hand cream comes in.

Why Hand Cream is a Must-Have for Nurses

  1. Protection Against Dryness:
The frequent handwashing and use of sanitizers can strip away the natural oils from our skin. A good hand cream helps replenish moisture and creates a protective barrier, ensuring my hands remain soft and hydrated throughout the day.
  2. Quick Absorption:
I love using a hand cream that absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave a greasy residue. This way, I can apply it between tasks without worrying about slipping on gloves or leaving marks on my paperwork.
  3. Soothing and Healing:
Many hand creams are formulated with soothing ingredients like aloe vera, shea butter, or vitamin E. These ingredients not only hydrate but also help heal any existing cracks or irritation, making my hands feel rejuvenated and cared for.
  4. Convenient Size:
I always carry a travel-sized hand cream in my work bag, so it’s easy to apply during brief breaks or while on the go. Having it on hand (pun intended!) ensures that I can take a moment to care for myself amidst a busy shift.
  5. Self-Care Reminder:
Using hand cream serves as a small act of self-care that reminds me to prioritize my well-being. In a demanding job like nursing, it’s important to find little ways to pamper ourselves, and applying hand cream is a simple yet effective ritual.

My Go-To Hand Cream

Currently, I’m obsessed with the Almond Milk Vanilla Hand Cream from M&S which I find particularly effective for my skin type. It’s rich enough to combat dryness but light enough for quick absorption. Plus, it has a subtle scent that makes me feel refreshed without being overpowering.

In a profession where we’re constantly caring for others, it’s essential that we also take care of ourselves. My hand cream is more than just a product; it’s a reminder to prioritize my health and comfort while I navigate the challenges of nursing. If you’re a nurse (or in any job that requires frequent handwashing), I highly recommend adding a quality hand cream to your daily essentials. Your hands will thank you!

As a retired nurse, I agree. Hand cream is essential. It’s a wonderful gift for a nurse, too!

You’re right, that’s probably the best gift you can give a nurse.
